Dr. Bitan Ghosh(born 22 April 1992) is an Indian entrepreneur, researcher, Chartered Engineer, and business strategist from Kolkata. He is recognized for developing the Elevent Index, a strategic framework focused on measuring startup investment quality, capital readiness, and fundraising preparedness.

As the Managing Director of Ghosh Group, he has led projects across engineering consulting, infrastructure development, financial advisory, technology integration, and corporate strategy. Over the course of his career, he has gained multidisciplinary experience in both Indian and international markets, including EPC-based engineering work in Kuwait.

His ongoing research and entrepreneurial initiatives focus on creating a structured support ecosystem for startups, enabling businesses at various stages of growth to improve investor readiness and build sustainable fundraising strategies.

Early life and background

Elevent Index

Elevent Index is an analytical framework developed by Dr. Bitan Ghosh for assessing startup investment quality, fundraising preparedness, and capital readiness. The model operates on the principle that startup evaluation should extend beyond traditional business analysis by examining both the structural quality of the enterprise and its preparedness to raise and deploy external investment capital efficiently.

Investment Quality Score

Within the framework, the Investment Quality Score (IQS) serves as a primary evaluation metric. It measures startups against eleven separate business parameters, with each category scored on a scale of 0–10. The final score is determined using a weighted stage-based allocation system that adjusts evaluation criteria according to the company’s stage of development.

IQS = Σ (Ei × Wi)

Where Ei represents the score assigned to each Elevent dimension and Wi represents the stage-based weightage for that dimension. Since the weights total 100%, IQS remains on a scale of 0 to 10.

Code Dimension Description
E1 Founder and Leadership Strength Founder capability, vision, execution, ethics, adaptability, and leadership depth.
E2 Market Opportunity Assessment Market size, accessibility, timing, demand validation, and long-term opportunity.
E3 Product and Innovation Strength Product relevance, differentiation, innovation, scalability, and defensibility.
E4 Business Model Viability Revenue logic, unit economics, pricing, profitability, and scalability.
E5 Financial Strength Financial discipline, runway, capital efficiency, reporting quality, and controls.
E6 Competitive Positioning Differentiation, market position, defensibility, moats, and customer loyalty.
E7 Customer and Growth Indicators Traction, acquisition, retention, satisfaction, growth quality, and expansion potential.
E8 Governance and Compliance Corporate structure, compliance, transparency, documentation, and governance discipline.
E9 Operational Readiness Systems, processes, talent, risk management, scalability, and operational efficiency.
E10 Investment and Exit Potential Investor attractiveness, valuation logic, exit pathways, and return potential.
E11 Future Sustainability Index Long-term adaptability, ESG readiness, technological relevance, and resilience.

IQS stage-based weightages

Stage E1 E2 E3 E4 E5 E6 E7 E8 E9 E10 E11
Idea / Pre-Seed 20% 15% 15% 10% 3% 8% 3% 5% 5% 6% 10%
MVP / Pilot 18% 13% 14% 10% 5% 8% 10% 4% 6% 4% 8%
Early Revenue 15% 10% 10% 12% 10% 8% 12% 6% 6% 5% 6%
Growth Stage 12% 10% 8% 12% 12% 10% 12% 8% 8% 4% 4%
Scale-Up / Pre-IPO 10% 8% 6% 10% 15% 10% 10% 12% 10% 5% 4%

Funding Readiness Score

The Funding Readiness Score (FRS) evaluates whether a startup is prepared to raise capital. It is calculated across five dimensions, each scored on a scale of 0 to 10. The final FRS is calculated on a scale of 10 using stage-based weightages.

FRS = Σ (Fi × Wi)

Where Fi represents the score assigned to each funding readiness dimension and Wi represents the stage-based weightage for that dimension. Since the weights total 100%, FRS remains on a scale of 0 to 10.

Code Dimension Description
F1 Financial Readiness Financial reporting, burn rate, runway, unit economics, capital planning, and investor-grade financial communication.
F2 Legal and Governance Readiness Corporate structure, cap table clarity, founder agreements, compliance, IP ownership, and governance transparency.
F3 Fundraising Strategy Readiness Capital requirement, use of funds, investor targeting, valuation logic, pitch quality, and fundraising process planning.
F4 Due Diligence Readiness Data room completeness, financial records, legal documentation, commercial evidence, risk documentation, and response capability.
F5 Transaction Readiness Term sheet understanding, negotiation capability, closing documentation, investor communication, and post-funding planning.

FRS stage-based weightages

Stage F1 F2 F3 F4 F5
Idea / Pre-Seed 10% 20% 50% 5% 15%
MVP / Pilot 20% 20% 40% 10% 10%
Early Revenue 25% 25% 25% 15% 10%
Growth Stage 30% 25% 20% 15% 10%
Scale-Up / Pre-IPO 30% 30% 15% 15% 10%

Capital Readiness Score

The Capital Readiness Score (CRS) combines Investment Quality Score (IQS) and Funding Readiness Score (FRS) into a single capital-readiness measure. IQS and FRS are each calculated on a scale of 10. The CRS formula uses a 70:30 logic, giving greater weight to underlying investment quality while still accounting for funding readiness.

CRS = 7 × IQS + 3 × FRS

Because IQS and FRS are both scored out of 10, this formula automatically produces a CRS on a scale of 0 to 100. No additional normalisation of IQS or FRS is required. Example: If IQS = 8.0 and FRS = 7.0, then CRS = (7 × 8.0) + (3 × 7.0) = 77 out of 100.

Capital Readiness Matrix

The Capital Readiness Matrix plots IQS and FRS to interpret whether a startup is investment-ready, promising but underprepared, structurally weak, or highly investable. In this interpretation, IQS reflects the quality of the startup and FRS reflects its readiness to raise capital.
