Dr. Arun Kumar S Haripad (born 30 May 1980), widely recognised by his pen name Ezhuthalan, is an Indian poet, author, lyricist, educator and social contributor from Kerala. His literary output in Malayalam and English reflects a sustained engagement with themes of justice, compassion, ethical responsibility and cultural continuity.
He is currently serving as an English teacher in the Vocational Higher Secondary Education sector under the Government of Kerala and is actively involved in literary, artistic and social organisations.
Early years and education
Dr. Arun Kumar S was born in Haripad, a culturally vibrant town in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. From childhood, he was exposed to an environment that valued learning, public service and literary expression.
His father, V. N. Sivasankara Pillai, and his mother, Dr. L. Jayasree, a retired academic professional, nurtured his interest in language, ethics and critical thinking.
He pursued postgraduate studies in English literature, followed by professional teacher training at the Teacher Education Centre, Kayamkulam. After qualifying the State Eligibility Test (SET), he completed doctoral research leading to a PhD in English. He later expanded his academic credentials by earning a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Annamalai University.
Career
Literary journey
Dr. Arun Kumar S Haripad began publishing poetry in the early years of the 21st century. His first Malayalam poetry book, Sudarshanam, introduced him as a socially conscious voice in contemporary Malayalam literature.
His poetry collection Novu was formally released in Thiruvananthapuram by Kerala’s Education Minister V. Sivankutty. The proceeds from the book were dedicated to relief initiatives supporting victims of the Wayanad landslides.
His English-language collection, Truth, Goodness and Beauty Behind Love, was launched by Kerala’s Agriculture Minister P. Prasad at a public programme held in Haripad.
Additional works by him include Good Vision, Porali, Ezhuthalan, and Atmayanathinte Kavita, the latter later adapted into an audio poetry presentation.
Contributions to music
Beyond print literature, Dr. Arun has written lyrics for devotional music projects. His devotional albums include Ambalapuzha Kannan, Mannarisala Stuti Geetangal, Nenjile Novu, and Munpe Nadannavar, which integrate poetic language with spiritual devotion.
Academic and cultural engagement
As an educator, Dr. Arun is known for blending literary studies with moral inquiry and social awareness. He frequently participates as a speaker in academic discussions, literary festivals and cultural programmes across Kerala.
He currently serves as President of Ee Yugam Literary and Cultural Association, Editor of Darppanam Magazine, and President of both Uvakalasahiti and IPTA Haripad.

Dr. Arun Kumar S Ezhuthalan is actively engaged in social service and educational development, particularly in the regions of Thrippakkudam and Thalavady. His initiatives include school renovation efforts, yoga and wellness programmes for children, disaster-response coordination and charitable outreach.
